I currently have very little OpenNMS time. My day job does not require a network management system, so I’ve been progressing my current OpenNMS project in fits and starts. I’ve reluctantly reached the conclusion that I’m now an amateur OpenNMS developer.
Amateur Developer
June 25th, 2009It’s the Community, Stupid.
May 8th, 2009There’s been a lot of discussion regarding the usage of the term “Open Source” this week. I feel a quick post on my views on the subject is in order (whilst I consider a hit-and-run friday night commit).
The Cathedral and the Bazaar revisited
April 20th, 2009I’ve been re-reading Eric S. Raymond’s The Cathedral and the Bazaar”. On a second reading, I find I have to agree with my ex-boss Mark; ESR does rather seem rather more fervently evangelical than I remember (I’m paraphrasing here). That doesn’t mean that there’s not a lot of good stuff in his essay though.
rebuilding my development environment
April 16th, 2009I’ve been spending some of my free time working on finishing up the OpenNMS availability report persistence feature. I started work on this far to long ago to admit, and the fact that there’s unfinished code lying around in trunk has been pricking my conscience.
Entrepreneurial Myths
March 28th, 2009I picked up a copy of The Economist on the way to Frankfurt for the OpenNMS European User Conference a couple of weeks ago. I’ve done this since air travel first became part of my working life. I suspect most regular readers chose The Economist for it’s insight and global coverage. I chose it because it’s small, and I can read all the articles I can understand whilst the plane is still on the tarmac.
OpenNMS UCE 2009
March 15th, 2009So I’m back home from Frankfurt now, and a very short blog post is in order.
Return of the niche players and other late-night thoughts.
February 24th, 2009I started a new job this week. The induction day was run at an office a long way from home, so I decided to stay overnight with my friends Jane and Kevin. Jane and Kevin are both extremely experienced IT professionals and their insight, though rooted in their own particular markets is always thought-provoking.
OpenNMS Users Conference Europe
January 21st, 2009I booked my flight to Frankfurt today, and I see from Tarus’s Blog that the agenda for the conference is beginning to come together.
RT Trouble Ticket Integration
January 17th, 2009After having a crack at trouble ticket integration with OTRS, it seemed a good idea to add RT as well. Alex Finger and I made a start on this during DevJam last year, but it turned out to be a lot simpler than I’d expected.
